This is my second b&d hedger that I have purchased. My first one lasted me 4 years then one day it started smoking around the motor so hopefully I made a good choice in going with this one again since the battery outlasted the unit and usually the battery is the most expensive part . Now on to the tool itself –
Cutting is great with up to half inch no problem
Battery life is not bad usually get an hour out of one charge.

When I originally went looking for a hedge trimmer, I was looking for brands that had good ratings, but also one that I already had a battery for! With Back & Decker you can interchange the batteries with ease! I also need to preface that I have no hedges at all and did not use this for that purpose. I did buy it in order to cut down super tall thick weeds. When I say tall, I mean over my 5’1″ height. I live out in the county of IN, property backs up to a creak where lots of wild weeds can grow to crazy heights. This year I got behind on maintaining and they got to big to handle with a weed-eater! So I gave this a try and let me tell you, it worked perfectly! Cut it all down with no resistance. Super easy to handle and maneuver, not too heavy at all either.

I purchased the trimmer only as I have B&D tools that use the Li-Ion battery system and have 4 of them, a regular charger and a fast charger. The trimmer is not only pretty light, it’s extremely well balanced as well, so use-fatigue should not become a problem. It also gives much better flexibility that similar corded trimmers with unlimited freedom of movement, angles of approach, etc. It’s incredibly quiet in use and cuts like butter through small and medium stems. Larger stems (1/2″ to 3/4″ take a slow, gradual approach to cut them in stages or it will jam (easy pull-away removal, though).

I used it first to square off a very large rectangular evergreen hedge outside our front window (about 8′ x 4′ x 5′) that had explosive growth since mid-spring. It gave me even cuts with ease, no binding, smooth and easy to control. It took me all of 15 minutes, after which the battery wasn’t even warm which told me it wasn’t being drained too quickly. I switched out the battery (to recharge) for the next project which was clearing a very large area of brush growing between our new house and a small creek that runs behind it. It handled the approx 200 sq. ft. of growth without a single hitch. Again the battery was not running hot, so the trimmer was not being over taxed. I was thrilled with this first use.

A few recommendations, though: before first use, spray the blades with a lubricant such as WD-40 & let the blades run for a few seconds to distribute. To help reduce or eliminate any sap build-up on the blades afterwards, spray it again and run the blades for 15-20 seconds to help clean and prevent any binding on the next use. Finally, unless you have two or more batteries, I suggest you also purchase the rapid charger. Your batteries will be fully charged in 15-20 minutes rather than the 45 minutes or more the standard charger (supplied with the kit) will take.

I couldn’t be happier with this purchase and have absolutely no buyer’s remorse. B&D has come through again. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED! Enjoy.

Pros – nice tool, easy to use, Not too heavy for a small person. Con – Did NOT come with a battery. leaves on cut edges turn brown.

Perfect for trimming hedges. Tough machine, long-lasting batteries (purchased separately), and light-weight, to boot. Reliable and well-made. One of my favorite battery-operated hand tools. Recommend highly.

Exactly what I needed. Works great.

I feel like many people don’t give black and decker a lot of credit. I have many black and decker tools and they have been great. From really old circular saws to modern battery powered they have serves me well. This is no exception. Cuts with ease. Relatively quiet. Light weight considering it is battery powered. Weight can fluctuate based on battery size. I use the smaller batteries. I use the B and D blower for small spots or quick tasks instead of dragging out my backpack blower. The battery powered blower does not last long on a battery but the hedge trimmer did. I am impressed with the cut, ease of use, and the battery usage. Glad I made this purchase.

Easy to use and does a great job on my small hedges.

This is the tool by itself with any battery. It’s very nice, works great with Black & Decker 20v max batteries. This feels lighter than my corded Black & Decker trimmer. It’s also a lot more useful as I can take it anywhere and does not need an electric cord, which is the only way I can trim the branches on the edge of my property. I also like how lighter this feels compared to the corded model, you don’t have to drag a cord or be within reach of an electrical outlet. This is also safer to use as there is no danger of accidentally chopping up the electric cable, which I’ve done a couple of times.

This trimmer is very nicely balanced, and it trims my hedges with ease. I just used the 2 AH battery from my weed trimmer and it lasts a long time.

  12. Smitty

I’ve never had an electric trimmer. I always used just hand clippers. Wow, wish I had this years ago. My overgrown lilacs, mock orange and bridal wreath bushes never looked better. Battery life was great was able to do so much in such a short amount of time. Easy to handle and not too heavy even for this 74 yr old Grandmom!

  13. Luis Gonzalez

I bought this as I had two 18v Black and Decker batteries. Will not cut through thicker branches easily and the blades trap wood debris between them which stops the blades. The whole blade assembly can easily bend when put under pressure and needs to be straightened. I’ve had to revert to my heavier petrol trimmer for the tougher work and it makes the Black and Decker look like a child’s toy.
